Character History (Pre-Veil): Lethal Weapon Wiki

Post Veil History: Riggs arrived through the Veil and had no clue what had happened. There were those initial attempts at just doing what he thought was just normal - going to work, going home - but that didn't exactly pan out. Without any real sense of direction he opted to fall back onto a habit that he relied on when he lost everything the first time. Alcohol. He stuck with this entirely wrong plan for a few months until one night, while asleep on the beach, he caught sight of a woman being attacked. He wasn't sober, but he was aware enough to want to act, to want to do something about it and so he tried to casually interrupt the incident. The incident turned out to be a vampire attack and Riggs' world blew wide open with that reveal. Of course, he blamed the alcohol at first, but then he started to do some actual investigation work and finding out whether or not what he saw was real or if he was just really in need of a trip to rehab.

They were real.

It meant a change for him, because he realized that not everyone out there knew they were real and that was dangerous.

He spent the next few months figuring out how to track them and what exactly they were. Were they people? Was it like they showed in movies and TV where they were already dead? He didn't have all the answers, but he could help people and that's all that mattered to him.

Zoe was sent to LA to track down this vampire hunter that wasn't in the system - because that meant only one thing. He didn't belong here. He ran into him at a bar and after a few drinks and an introduction, she started to answer his questions about vampires. He thought that she was really convenient until she made the offer to come to the UK and find out what else was real in this world. He didn't accept her offer right away, but a week later he was on a flight to London and he was learning about Knights and werewolves and everything else that he knows back home would have put him in more than just Cahill's office.

He took it all in and he accepted the offer. He wanted something to focus on, something to give him a shot at saving lives. He trained with Zoe and she made sure that he had the opportunity to have a record within the Police Academy so that if he ever decided the Knights weren't for him, that he'd have a job that he'd be good at.

After several months in London he approached Wynn about getting positioned in LA. He knew there were field offices in other places and even if this world wasn't the world that Miranda had been in, he still wanted to be near her. He wanted to be where she might find him if somehow, some version of her slipped through the cracks and ended up here. Wynn agreed and allowed him to return to LA. Riggs offered to take a position at the LAPD in order to help with any red tape that might come up when there were instances that needed a bit more of an official piece of paperwork. It seemed a good plan, considering how often the Knights found themselves in positions that they couldn't explain their way out of.

He's been in LA for four years now, and while his partner isn't quite as understanding as Roger was -- he's still able to make a difference in the lives of others. Even his own.

Chosen Canon Point: Post 2x03 - After he leaves Palmer's hotel, seeing her get into the cab.

Personality and Psychology: Martin Riggs is a mess. His military career took him all the way to being a Navy SEAL and when he left his team, he joined the Sheriff's Office in El Paso. Using his training and devotion to protecting others to become part of their narcotics division. He had a beautiful wife, a lovely home, and a child on the way.

Then it all came crashing down around him. His wife was driving herself to the hospital after going into labor, but she never made it. Due to a complicated and tangled issue with his father in law and the Mexican drug cartel, Miranda was killed in a car collision. She and the baby both died before Riggs could get to the hospital to welcome his new child into the world. From there he spiraled out. He wanted to die, because he had nothing left to live for. He was hyper focused on the death of his wife and unborn child and trying to find out if it had been connected to anything he'd been working on.

It was an unhealthy obsession, one that put his career at risk. His father in law, the City Attorney for LA, pulls strings and helps him transfer to the LAPD from El Paso. Miranda had been from LA and moving to LA allows him to feel closer to his wife. He buys an airstream and parks it on her favorite beach and proceeds to self-medicate his sorrow with alcohol and recreational drugs. His new partner Roger Murtaugh, tries to cope with the reckless behavior of his partner, but it's a very trying situation. Even with the therapy sessions that are required from the department, Riggs is still toeing the line between trying to get himself killed and doing the right thing. He's consistently following the standard of doing whatever he wants and then just hoping that it works out and that solving the case outweighs the methods he used to get there.

Through his active case load, his therapy sessions with Cahill, his partnership with Roger, and the extended family that being Roger's partner provides he starts to heal. He stops drinking. Stops any of the things that could harm himself and focuses more on his job and where he wants to be in this new life that he's realizing he has. He starts to be interested in a DEA agent, but that falls apart when she realizes that his wife's death is connected to the cartel. It spins him out again and he finds himself in Mexico trying to kill the man that killed his wife. He does find the head of the cartel, and with perfect timing from his partner he doesn't kill him. They end up solving the murder of his wife and when he returns to LA he feels as if he's "Normal" now. That his obsession over the death of his wife is over and that now he has to do what everyone else does. It's a bit unusual for Riggs, but he wants to cope as best he can. He reaches out to the DEA agent, Palmer, and tries to rekindle things with her. Which isn't something that he's really good at doing. He hasn't dated since his wife and even then it wasn't a standard relationship. When he realizes that he's messing things up, he doesn't know what to do and when he finally realizes what he needs to do, it's too late and Palmer has realized that she can't commit to something right now. It leaves Riggs in a place he hasn't been in a while, but it also leaves him realizing that he is capable of something new. That he's going to be okay and that there will be other relationships -- that losing Miranda didn't close that door for him.

On a core level, Riggs is fiercely loyal. He's protective of those that can't protect themselves -- especially children and women. He has a darkness in him that he's not afraid of. He uses it to push to the edge of every situation and allows that reckless behavior to put a heavy dose of fear into those that are on the other side of the law. He's dedicated to his job and to making sure that those that aren't doing the right thing are brought to justice - even if it requires a few rogue punches. He's soft-spoken when things are serious and loud when things need a voice of not-so-reasonable.

Why do you think this character would join/work with the Knights? I explained this up in his post-veil history, but it's because it's a chance to help people that don't realize just how many dangerous things are out there.

Do you have a preference for which member of the Knights your character is squired to? He was squired to Zoe Weiss.
